Western North Carolina Stream Report for The Week Beginning on February 16th, 2015

Brown Trout

Delayed Harvest Rivers:

Bugs: Little Black Stones, Little Black Caddis, Blue Winged Olives, Midges

Flies: Double Bead Stones, Rubber legged Hare’s Ear’s and Princes, Spanflex Worms, Electric Caddis, Soft Hackles, Black Midge, Peacock Caddis

Report: Cold, Cold, and more Cold is what we have in the forecast for the most part over the next week. “Middle of the day” is the name of the game and there will be some players of the fish variety for sure. They will be lethargic, but with an accurate and appropriate drift, they won’t be able to say no. Fish lighter leaders/tippets in the lighter range (5/6X) to help get your nymphs get down. Like everything else, most of the feeding will take place subsurface but we are expecting a reappearance of some of our favorite mayflies, The Blue Quills and Quill Gordons, typically let their presence be known toward the middle to the end of February!

Davidson River:

Bugs: Small Black Stone, Black Caddis, Blue Winged Olives,Midges will be the main fare, but don’t forget stoneflies of all sizes and colors especially on the main river (paralleling 276).

Flies: Blk Bird’s Nest, Skinny Nelson, AP Nymph, Buggy Stone, Double Bead Stones, Sparrow Midge, Brook’s Baetis, Cased Caddis, Electric Caddis, Klinkenhammer BWO, Copper Greenie, Spanflex Worm.

Report: This is a great time of year to explore the river (if you can get to it) away from the hatchery. Look for the deeper runs and pools and dredged your larger flies through flirting with the bottom. If you don’t loose a couple flies you aren’t deep enough. Find areas that fish can hold without fighting the current. Fish the seams and fish them slow. Be ready for some midge/BWO action but don’t hold your breath. Want some help learning to fish this river. Hire one of our Professional guides to show you the ropes.

The Tennessee Tail Waters:

Bugs: Midges, Blue Winged Olives, some Sulphurs

Flies: Klinkhammer BWO, Quill Parachute BWO, Midge Cluster, Griffith’s Gnat, Blk Brook’s Sprout, Black fly Larva, Moola Midge, Zebra Midges

Report: The Tailwater’s will be your best best if you had your hopes set on dry fly fishing but even that is not an absolute. The water will remain consistent despite the cooler are temps. Bugs will be moving in certain areas and the question might be can you get a cast to them. Make sure to take a heavier weight (or faster) rod to handle any wind that “Mother Nature” decides to throw your way. Shorter leaders should be in order as well. Make sure to wear the right clothing to keep you warm and on the water longer!

Wild Water:

Bugs: Not a lot but some of the usual’s. Blue Winged Olives, Black Stoneflies, Black Caddis, Midges

Flies: Skinny Nelson, Copper Brownie, AP Nymph, Black Copper John, BWO Poison Tung, Purple Nurple, BlackBirds Nest.

Report: Don’t expect a ton out of this water over the next week with temperatures hanging in the 30’s. The heat of the day will provide almost all of the action. Nymphing will be your best bet and look for the deepest part of the river every where you fish. Fish slow and meticulously, making sure to tick the bottom. Make sure to return the fish to the water ASAP to ensure their gills don’t freeze.
